Al Crise Day 2

I met the Fort Worth Fly Fishers out at the Paluxy river for Al Crise Day 2. My D3000 was left in Grandpa's car so I can't post the pics off of that, but I have a few on my phone.I had a great time! 1000 trout were stocked for the trout derby so I fished for the lame little stocker troots for a while, getting my limit to take home for the grill. I started out with 1 trout on an electric blue north fork nymph

then I hooked something nice, which turned out to be a 14 inch channel cat. It fought hard on my 4wt, but I still got it in pretty easily. Next cast, the line went tight, so I set the hook and my reel started screaming. Not a troot! I fought this thing for a little over 10 minutes and finally landed it. It was a nice 6 or 7lb channel, big enough to put a nice bend in the 4wt.

After that I filled out my troot limit, got a nice Redear and Green sunfish hybrid, a few small bass, and casted at a few carp. I think I got about 16 troots total, with the best one going 15 inches.

After I got out of my waders(I was freezing!) I walked on over to Les, who made me cast his sweet little 1960s Shakespeare fiberglass 5wt, which was SWEET! I want a glass rod now! I learned a bunch of casting techniques from Les, and then Jay "Fishy' Fullum walked over and taught me a few things. If you don't know, Fishy is an amazing fly tyer who writes the creative column for Fly Tyer magazine. He also casts GREAT and is a great teacher. He gave me one of the best pieces of advice i've ever heard when it comes to casting-
"Imagine the handle of this rod is a glass tube, and if you squeeze it too hard it'll break. If you find the right amount of pressure to apply on the rod handle, you'll be able to throw that fly anywhere and delicately drop that fly on the surface wherever you want it"

I had a great time! Check out the event here on the TFF and the FWFF site

**Update! here are the pics that were on my D3000

Great day!

Rough Creek inches closer

3 days until we leave, I can't wait! the weather's killing me though. It's a nice 70 in Coppell right now according to my Ipod. While we're there,, a cold front is going to drop that into the 30s. Jonathan and I might be wading a frozen pauluxy with the thursday night low in the 20s. I don't care. i've got warm stuff and I can handle it!

Great thread on the TFF. Proper fly porn and fish porn in my book.

I could use a little salt therapy soon. Closest to that is slinging flies at golden bonefish at the secret spot tomorrow morning. Haven't seen a carp on the fly in a while. After catching all the dreaded Troots yesterday I need to got some carp slime on my rod handle before it becomes too trouty.

Trout day

As winter approaches the trout come- TPWD stocks trout all over Texas and Oklahoma stocks several water bodies as well. I went over to catch some trout for the first time since January. Heres the report--

I headed over to the blue river first. I fished around Areas 3 and 4 then headed over to Area 1. I started out throwing a hares ear with a zebra midge as a dropper and ended up throwing about every fly I had. Dries, soft hackles, buggers, streamers, worms, nymphs, all without hope of getting anything. No one was catching so I just got in the car. We drove up to Turner Falls to try for some 'fresher' stocker trout. I got up and rigged up my 4wt with a soft hackle and walked up to the falls. Grandpa walks downstream a ways while I fling flies around the trout I see. There are some really big ones stocked this year, I saw a few that might go 23-25 inches. I got 1 12 inch trout and a little super washed out colored longear below the low water crossing right next to the falls.
Then, I heard my name being called so I gathered up my stuff and walked over to Grandpa who is calling me. He just happened to have found an immense school of trout willing to take flies. I fished the school for 2 hours and 42 minutes landing 39 trout up to 16 inches. I caught on a Cat's Whisker (gray/white), San Juan Worm (dark brown w/ 1 split shot), woollly bugger (olive size 10) trailing a zebra midge (size 14), BH Electric blue North Fork Nymph (sz 10)and even a cap spider for a short time.

in this picture you can see the school, see all the brown oblong shapes?

Fished below this pool for another 15 minutes landing a few trout and losing a smallmouth of around 2lbs then got back in the car for the hour drive back to Whitesboro. A good day in my book.

I got
Rainbow Trout-42
Golden Rainbow Trout-1
Longears-7
Green Sunfish-2
