I took a walk tonight. It started as a sudden urge to get
out of the house, away from the computer and homework and out into the fresh
air. I got in the truck and just started driving. Somehow I ended up at the
library pond in the end, and parked my truck, reaching for my fly rod and chest
pack, which sat in the back of the cab behind the driver seat. It was an old
favorite combo for me that stays in the truck at all times no matter where I’m
going, a five weight TFO with a butter smooth click modded Lamson reel.
Clutching the rod I slung my chest pack over my shoulder like I usually wear it
and walked toward the pond that I’ve fished extensively since I was really
young. It’s never had particularly large fish in it, but it’s always consistent
and I’ve always been able to nick a few bass or something out of it’s murky
waters.

I walked down to the water’s edge and peered down into the
silty depths. The weathered stone surrounding the pond had seen it’s better
days, and there were more stones missing from the wall every time I visited the
pond. The grass was crackly and dry from the summer heat that left it
continually parched for days on end. The sad little fountain continued to spew
lackadaisically into the air, halfheartedly spinning water around. I saw some
small bluegill and some of this year’s brood of bass darting around the green
slop algae that lay around the edges of the pond.

I’ve grown up with a lot of these waters near me. Gone are
the good old days when I prowled these ponds full time with both a fly rod and
a bass rod. Images flood my memories every time I pound the banks of times when
I’d done particularly well; those times in the winter when I couldn’t feel my
fingers, toes, or ears, donning a floppy beanie and full winter garb rivaling a
snowboarder out in the winter, consistently casting and retrieving, dredging
the bottom with a clouser minnow and nicking a lethargic largemouth on almost
every cast; Walking around in the early springtime with Jonathan when the water
is clear, sight casting to bass and big bluegill holding tight to the banks
with small streamers; standing on the concrete culvert that I always used to
pretend was the front deck of a bass boat, working an imaginary trolling motor
with my foot and twitching a plastic worm across the bottom and pulling out
bass every couple casts, setting the hook like I’d seen the pro’s do from a
young age; sitting on the culvert in the dog days of summer with Marty, feeling
the cool breeze coming through the storm drains on our legs, each sitting with
a ridiculously sweet Arizona iced tea casting wacky rigged worms out short
distances and twitching them every so often, discussing all of those ridiculous
situations that middle school age boys imagine in the summer. Those were the
days, I said to myself.

I’ve grown up on these ponds. Hell, I’ve been called
Pondbass for years, even though now I rarely go out in pursuit of these green
marauders anymore. I started fishing these places back in elementary school,
way back when a couple boys from my school and I decided that we all ought to
go fishing in a couple of the ponds in the area that were sure to contain fish.
Many a day was spent standing on the concrete path by the pond we knew as
Mason’s lake, named of course after one of the buddies I fished with. We would
cast and reel, laughing and catching fish. We sat there in awe of the massive
koi we called Ghost that I have still yet to catch- about 10 years now I’ve
been trying as well. We would always catch some bass, bluegill, bullheads, and
other fish, but we didn’t care, as long as we were getting out and fishing. I
grew up on The Drain, below the spillway at the Drain, The Library, Mason’s
Lake, The Back Pond, Andy Brown, The Creek, The across the street part of the
Library Pond, The Secret Spot, Valley Ranch, all of these have a special place
in my heart. Some of these it’s been years since I’ve actually fished.

My reminiscence was put on hold when something bit the
chartreuse popper I’d been twitching alongside the edges of the pond. I set the
hook, obviously caught off guard, and a small bluegill flew out of the water
and landed a couple feet in front of me. I laughed, unhooked the fish, admiring
its striking colors, and tossed it back. Cicadas buzzed in the cypress trees surrounding
the pond as the sun began to set. Some people walked on the path behind me and
I heard a woman gawk “It was the hottest day this month today- A hundred and
THREE! Can you believe that!” Yeah, welcome to Texas, I thought to myself, and
continued down the bank.

I could tell the bass weren’t really in the feeding mood,
for some reason the pond hasn’t been near as good as it had once been, back in
the good old days. The water has changed colors to a murky brown muck instead
of the stained reddish brown that the water usually looked. It smelled odd,
almost like the lake was turning over. I decided to take a walk down through a
familiar path where I had fished for years.

I followed the path along the canals down through the
houses, where the tree cover gets thick and even during the day it’s cool,
shaded, and dark. The canals get narrower and deeper, full of all species of
panfish, catfish, and bass. This, however, isn’t what I found when I got there.
I hadn’t been down here in ages; it had to have been at least a year. As soon
as I walked up to the section I had planned on fishing I saw something was
amiss. Was the canal drained? I could see a lot of exposed, hard dried caked
silt sitting where there was supposed to be not inches but several feet of water.
I walked around looking into the little puddle that remained where seven feet
of water had been. I looked for any signs of life in the water but failed to
see anything aside from a couple turtles and some small fish. Where fish had
once been plentiful there was nothing but muck and a small covering of water. I
found the source of the draining was the renovation work, moving up the canal
replacing the stone surrounding the edges. While I know it’s vital to keep
erosion from taking over, I was pretty disappointed at the sights that I was
facing. I kept walking downstream with a sick feeling in my stomach. It’s just
tough seeing places where I’d been fishing so long in shape like this.

I kept moving. I got to the bridge that had once been
decorated by “Town Center Environmental Dream Team 2005”, obviously a bunch of
elementary school age kids back then that were now a lot older, hell they may
be my age now. Graffito covers the inside of the tunnel underneath Parkway,
most of it painted by the hands of children with bits added from different
people over time. I saw where I had stood and caught numerous ten inch bluegill
a few years ago, massive crappie, bass, and a single warmouth that I had been
extremely surprised about. I clenched my fist on the grip of my five weight and
kept walking, letting out an audible sigh into the twilight.

I walked downstream even more, down toward Andy Brown. I
walked along the next section of the canal, which was now lined in concrete. I
know this section had been completely drained though there weren’t many fish in
it to begin with. I finally arrived at the spillway where the canal goes into
Andy Brown. I always loved this spot because it had some sort of post
apocalyptic feel to it, all run down and eroding like it had been forgotten in
time, it had been that way ever since I could remember, back to when Mom would
take Conner and I as toddlers to have picnics in the park and we were always
wanting to take walks down there, hopping from concrete block to concrete
block, being watchful for snakes that often hung out over here. Where the rocks
I used to stand on and fish once sat was leveled now, and a stone wall with a
fence surrounded this part of the pond. I sighed. The tree I once sat under and
fished during the summer, the early days of euro carp fishing for myself, was
gone now and burnt grass now replaced it. The whole pond had been renovated
with stone surrounding ¾ of it. It did look pretty nice, but after growing up
here and knowing the place like the back of my hand it’s pretty odd to see it
like this. The pond was a couple feet low and looked pitiful. I walked around
for a couple minutes but soon realized twilight was coming and I needed to get
back to my truck- more than a mile away from me now. I broke down the fly rod
and began walking back where I had come from, disappointed in the changes that
I had witnessed.

I’ve grown up on the water. I know these parks like the back
of my hand, it’s just odd to see them changing like this. It’s just hard to
explain, different, unsettling. The times are a changing I guess. In many ways
I feel like everything’s happening at warp speed. I mean look. I’m a senior
now. In a couple short months I’ll be leaving my hometown of Coppell for bigger
and better things- college, jobs, life. I think about where the time has gone,
realizing that all of those times I fished with the elementary gang, Hunter,
Mason, and the guys? That was almost ten years ago. Just that in itself is
daunting. I can’t believe time is passing so quickly. Just a couple weeks ago
it seems like that special time once a week I could convince my Mom to take me
out to Valley Ranch and fish the canals, multispecies action in a real hidden
gem, until I got kicked out by the police for a reason still unclear to me. I
was doing all I knew, fishing. Mom was my chauffer, bussing me between fishing
spots, reluctantly of course, but taking me from spot to spot allowing me to
run and gun from spot to spot at a young age. I look back at that and realize
now I’ve been driving for over a year now and now taking long journeys east,
out to the land of the giants. It’s amazing to me looking back. Now where did
all the time go?

I looked down at my shadow rotating as I passed each
streetlight, with the same orange glow that they’ve had for so many years,
since I used to go outside and play with the neighborhood kids, catching little
toads that we don’t seem to have too many of anymore, playing roller hockey,
kickball, tag, hide and seek, and other kid games on the block with many of the
kids that are now graduated and off at college. All the rest of us are in high school
now. Amazing.

I arrived at the car finally after walking for a long time,
silently thinking about all of this. I took my last few steps as I rounded the
corner on another streetlight, walking slowly out to my truck, unlocking it,
stowing my fly rod and chest pack in the back of the driver seat where it had
been. I walked over, opened the door, and started the car, and began driving
off into the darkness homeward bound after grabbing dinner. Where has all the
time gone?

Here's a report from a weekend session I did a week ago. Over here it seems that every session I do something odd, profound, inexplicably and unpredictably weird happens, and this was no exception. I turned up at the lake much later than I had planned because of the hellish traffic I got caught in heading out of town, So I turned up right after nightfall. I quickly got bait in the water with the groundbait sling, 34 balls of method out at around 70 yards on the snags and got my rigs out. I landed two small catfish which is the usual bycatch, but other than that it was a very quiet uneventful night. I got everything sorted and went to sleep. That was around 11pm, so around 2 or 3am I wake up to this horrifying barking, like a dog that wanted to kill me. Being alone on the bank in the middle of the wilderness it frankly scared the bloody hell out of me, but I couldn't figure out how far away it was and if it was someone's pet or a stray that lived in the woods. Needless to say I didn't leave my bivvy that night.
The view

Morning came early and I recasted everything and put 15 more balls of method mix out. I quickly landed 3 catfish then nothing, so I began to cook breakfast. I was in the middle of making a cuppa when I spot a black dog about 100 yards away skittishly hiding behind a fallen tree. I could tell it was only a pup, a year or two old at most, and a male Labrador retriever. I motioned for it and it slowly took a few steps...a few more.. then it just broke into a full run and jumped on me. This was really odd considering I’m literally in the middle of NOWHERE. I couldn't figure out where the dog came from, and no one was near. I decided to try to keep it around in case someone came looking for it, but of course that never happened. It got to where the dog was sleeping in my bivvy, which wasn't bad at all. I could tell he was a bit skinny and hungry, so it almost seemed like the dog had been dumped at the lake.
Dog- now since been named "Buff"
The day was quiet, and I spent the first half of it waiting for my mate Shane to show up, after being extremely delayed and went from possibly arriving before me to arriving in the morning after some miscalculations, to my dismay. He finally did and with how quiet it was I had it in my mind that I wanted to get moving and pick a different swim in hopes of getting into some fish. I started to pick up one of my rods to reel it in when Shane convinced me to leave them in for a bit longer in case something came by. I began to dismantle my bivvy, and almost finished it when I looked up and my middle rod tore off. I lifted into a heavy fish and started running backward toward my truck to get the fish turned out of the snags. After a few minute's brawl the fat Buffalo rolled into the net and I was well made up. The dog didn't know what to think, and we were a bit shocked to say the least at our change in luck.
The fish went 40lb 11oz, and is my seventh largest from Lake Fork.

Almost immediately upon releasing the fish, I hooked into a high teener carp and landed that along with a few more catfish. After that...nothing. Our luck changed just long enough to stop us moving to a new swim, then the action petered off when the wind died.
The night began quiet, with some fish showing themselves but definitely not many. Toward the end of the night we landed two high teeners each and some cats, but nothing decent. Morning came, and Shane followed with a common that was literally the length of the rig he caught it on, about seven or eight inches. I had a small one then Shane had a mid twenty. We started baiting again and The buffalo came back into the swim, giving us each one, mine at 25lb and Shane's at 28lb
That brought us to the end of the session. Shane ended up getting attached to the dog, and due to the fact that it seemed an awful lot like someone had dumped it on the side of the road he decided to take him home and keep it at his fishing dog after verifying that he wasn't micro chipped at the vet's office. Another fun one!

I, like
many other modern-age fly fishermen, am a twitter addict. I don’t even tweet
that much, I just feel that I use it quite a bit to keep up with what’s going
on in the scene, more so than the once popular Facebook and the numerous and
not-so-different others. I recently (today, actually) read a tweet that seemed
to evoke quite the response from me, sort of made me think. It essentially
said, “I think that too many folks are looking at fly fishing as a
competition.” It was sort of an epiphany for me, as it sort of summed up a lot
of my thoughts about the recent fly fishing comminuty as a whole. It’s part of
the reason I sort of withdrawed from it for a spell, but I am slowly coming
back into what I was a part of.

I
have a lot of people ask me why I quit fly fishing. In reality, I never really
“Quit”, I just sort of got frustrated with it. I did the same with bass
fishing. I always thought bass fishing was way too overly dramatic and
competitive for me, like everything was a race to prove that one was better
than you. Fly fishing, sadly enough, seems to be exactly that as well, and
there really are some people that are turning it into a sort of arms race of
who can be superior and more competitive than their “opponent”. I do realize
and see that there are a lot of honest folks in both sports, most notably fly
fishing, that don’t partake in this style, but it’s the few that are turning
fishing into a numbers game that are putting people off it. I see too often on
the numerous forums people proclaiming their triumphs with their personal bests
listed in bold and italicized to represent importance, or people making posts
with such titles as “I caught 75 bass today!!!”-Oh you’re so cool, I want to be
like you- that’s not the immediate impression I get. It’s not a numbers game,
fishing is about getting out and doing what you like while enjoying the
beautiful places that fishing is synonymous with, without the competition and
the bickering that comes with this behavior. I don’t really understand why
these tightly wound personalities are creating this image in the sport, but it
really gets under my skin to say the least. To each their own I guess, just the
constant bragging and competing started to get to me.

This
may sound like a complete rant, and that’s of course exactly what it is, but I
felt compelled to put it into prose for one reason or another. I guess you
could consider this my welcoming back into the fly fishing blogosphere.

Bass were biting too, too bad I forgot to bring the fly gear with me!
Austin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17939637113913904342noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6206561418904248192.post-29120725309976966712012-04-24T00:11:00.002-05:002012-04-26T22:30:34.438-05:00Back into it!Got out last week for a few hours to try and get a carp on the fly. First I headed to the Secret Spot. With all the rain we've had, I knew it would be high, but it was ridiculous! Water was about 10 feet above normal judging from the grass. Saw some fish feeding, but they were all buffalo and the current was insane so I decided to go over to a pond close by that holds some pretty crazy varieties of fish, including drum, carp, buffalo, spotted bass, and most notably, gar.

Upon getting there, I found the bass were definitely on the feed, and caught a few on my way around the pond. Finally I got to a big tree that hangs over the water that's usually a really good spot for carp on euro gear. Right when I started to make a cast a gar emerged from the shadow of the tree, and I kind of flicked over the fly I had on at the time, a Backstabber carp fly. I didn't think that I would have a chance with that fish. I was wrong.

The gar slammed the fly like a freight train. As usual with gar I let it run for a good while then set the hook harder than i'd set in a long time. The fish was definitely hooked and I began fighting it in. It took about 10 minutes and I was able to net her. Turned out to be a HUGE spotted gar, definitely a new PB. Tried to get a hero shot with her but she slipped back in before I could. This is the only pic I have.

Way too long of a while.

I realized today that I hadn't fly fished in over a month and a half, too long when you live in a place that the water's not frozen over and fishing's possible year round. I decided that I needed to get out, and headed to the Library ponds today after school. What I didn't remember for some reason that it had rained a few days before. Once I got there, I found that the familiar flat close to the culverts that I fish so much had leaves blanketing the surface and the water was pretty cold.

I walked the entire length of the pond, then walked down to the next section and continued, flicking a clouser or a bugger into the muddy cold water. I really didn't see ANYTHING the whole time I was there. I just kept walking until I got to Andy brown then just left. Oh well, still felt good to get out and fly fish again. Sooner or later it'll be spring and i'll be chasing the sandbass run and the bass spawn. Can't wait till then but in the mean time I guess I can tie some flies in anticipation.Austin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17939637113913904342noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6206561418904248192.post-52410161470003791202012-01-09T23:49:00.002-06:002012-01-09T23:51:03.228-06:00TFRs is BACKWell, I guess i'm back too. I haven't posted in almost a MONTH! DANG that seems like a long time. I promise I won't be gone from posting here for that long again. I've made a new years resolution to start posting regularly on the blog's Facebook page too, so start looking on there more often and you should get to see some cool stuff.

The main thing on this post is the TFRs, or Texas Fly Reports, site is back up and seems to be running smoothly at last! The past host site was running ok at first, but we soon found out that the forum software we were using had been abandoned and we started getting absolutely slammed with spammers. We were getting hundreds of spammers a week signing up on the site, and it just got overwhelming. Shannon finally decided that our small band of moderators(basically him and me)couldn't deal with it anymore and recently took the site down and moved it over to where it's hosted now at phpBB. Sadly, we lost all of our past information, all posts, member profiles, threads, everything, but we have the site back and are starting to promote it again to try and replenish the info we lost and get some new topics rolling on the site. Well, with that being said, the site is now back up and running fine, so go sign up and start posting! There will be some big changes within the next few weeks, so keep checking back often!

Go check the site out at www.texasflyreports.comAustin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17939637113913904342noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6206561418904248192.post-49577263864229172392011-12-13T23:58:00.001-06:002011-12-13T23:59:50.373-06:00The hard partShannon challenged me last year to take on the "Catch a carp on the fly every month of the year" challenge. Of course this would be the hard part, catching a carp on the fly in December and January. I need to FIND some first then go about catching them on a fly rod. most of them are deep right now but sooner or later I hope things will come together for me. I've made it through May, June, July, August, September, October, and November so far, hopefully I can seal the gap in the next 5 months and finally get the challenge over with.

Another thing is I finally got a decent camera for video, a GoPro! I've been playing with it a little bit, it's really cool. I need to play with the settings and figure them out before I can really start using it but it's gonna be fun having I know.
Hopefully i'll have some actual fish in the next post (lol)Austin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17939637113913904342noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6206561418904248192.post-83874580864327935782011-11-24T23:49:00.001-06:002011-11-24T23:52:37.646-06:00Happy Thanksgiving!Happy Turkey day everyone! Hope you guys had a great day.

As always, I got to go to Rough Creek again. While we didn't get to stay any more than a day this time but it was still great. Good food and even better fishing. The crappie were pretty active toward the end of the day.

I fished LLELA again Saturday and Sunday. When I got there Saturday I learned that they were generating, there was 335cfs coming down according to the website. AWESOME! It really turns on down there when there's water coming downstream.

Picked up the first common pretty quickly, then caught a second one from the slough behind me.
I made my way down to the creek past the railroad bridge and saw a ridiculous number of fish; Carp, Buffalo, Gar, everything. Couldn't get any commitments though, I did have a few very close chases from carp.

Sunday was completely different. This time Jonathan came with me. Not only did we not catch anything sizeable, but no carp or buffs were landed. I caught a 2 inch long bass on the first cast, I seriously thought the fly had a leaf caught on it. Well, I'll be back soon, they'll start stocking trout down there in a few short weeks!Austin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17939637113913904342noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6206561418904248192.post-44081445120248704772011-10-30T23:52:00.001-05:002011-10-31T00:00:33.737-05:00Trinity on the flyI decided to fish LLELA(the Lake Lewisville dam) today after, well, anything. I had no idea what the fishing would be like down there since I haven't been down there since March. They were releasing a little water, around 200cfs, so there was a good bit of flow for me to deal with. I started walking downstream, plopping a fly into a pool every now and then. I really wasn't seeing much so I made a big move- all the way to the railroad bridge. I walked the mile long trail down to it and fished around it for a while. Caught a few bluegill right before I went under it then came to the other side. Then I saw something that interested me, a creek that dumped in another 70 or so feet downstream from me. I walked to it and saw some bluegill and bass holding on a big log in the water. The bank was pretty high up off the water so I couldn't hit it from that spot, so I started searching for a way to get down there.

I found a worn down trail, I don't even think it was a human made trail. Once it led me to the water I saw another ledge but this time some roots provided me a climb down spot. Then I looked beneath the surface and couldn't believe my eyes. Carp, Buffalo, River Carpsuckers, Blue suckers, Redhorses, and assorted other species scattered all around. I just sat there and stood amazed for a few minutes, watching from a clear vantage point at the vast number of fish below me. I then saw a target, a carp that was cruising really slowly, dropping down toward the bottom every now and then to pick up a possible food item. I made my first cast from 15 feet up the bank on that ledge. I dropped the fly in about 2 feet ahead of the fish. I really didn't expect much, maybe a look but no take, but the opposite happened. The fish saw the fly, picked up speed, and inhaled it. I set the hook, Fish ON!
The weird thing was none of the other fish spooked, I even had 2 more carp try to take the fly away from the fish! Turned out to be a nice little fish, an immaculate mid single that was very healthy.
I went right back to fishing. I had a few spook but ended up getting several more interested looks. Nothing for about 40 minutes, at least no takes that is. I didn't have much time down there since it was a 30 minute walk down and I needed to get back so I gave myself 10 more minutes and decided I'd call it a day after that was up. Then I saw a feeding buff pass by, stopping really close to me to feed. I stuck the fly down in it's path and the fish kept moving toward it. Once it was an inch from it, it's head went down again. I saw the fish directly on top of the fly, so I waited a crucial second. Then, a puff of mud went through it's gills. I knew it had the fly then. Hookset and Fish ON!

This was one of the rare occasions where the buff's fight was harder than the carp's fight by a long shot, it took several hard runs and nearly bent the hook straight! I had it in the net soon though, before my 10 minutes was up.

Not bad! This is the first buff on the fly I've caught from LLELA, so that made it even better!

It was time to walk back so I headed back toward the dam. The lighting was perfect for some pictures so I took out the DSLR and snapped a few random pics on the way back.
Nice mix of bass, bluegill, and greenies before the storm hit. Caught all of them on a blue north fork nymph or a gray/olive clouser.
The fish are kind of off the feed from the high flows coming from all the rain. The carp want nothing to do with anything i'm presenting them but the buffs wanted to play. Landed 1 out of 3 hooked. Also hooked a carp but somehow it got off.

All I know about this spot right now is it's MUDDY! Ridiculously muddy, it's hard to walk without slipping. Also the weeds are really coming back, gonna have to whip out the machete next time I try to hit it, a few of my spots are getting clogged up with weeds.

It was pretty slow for almost the whole trip but we had enough jokes going that the session turned out OK, then with a final fish for me that changed everything.

It started with me showing up, semi lost and looking for a swim that suited me. Erick and Ryan wouldn't show up for another hour or two so I had some time to scout out the are we'd be fishing. I found an old abandoned boat ramp and cast out a marker float once I found a proper spot to set up a bivvy. First cast I marked 16 feet about 45 yards out. perfect. Set the brolly up and began getting all my crap sorted out.

Erick showed up around 7 and we quickly got out in the Diablo and set the marker floats. The Fishfinder on it finally works so I was able to set GPS coords on top of each of the markers so we could re-set them if any of them got moved for any reason(that happened a few times). We started baiting out huge amounts of stuff. Maize, cracked corn, hemp, tigers, boilies, range cubes, everything really. We knew we'd have hell with catfish so we didn't lay off baiting heavily. Soon we had rods in the water. Then the sequence we'd be following over the course of the weekend started to become clear. Catfish....catfish...catfish...another catfish....catfish...you get the point, THEY WERE RELENTLESS! we caught a ton of them, and none of them were decent sized, all were little eater channels, almost identical from fish to fish.

We all started to get hungry and made some stuff to eat, I made some rigs, and it got kind of quiet. Then, we had our first idea of the trip. Fire.

Erick gathered up some stuff and we poured lighter fluid on it. Fire.

It cured our boredom for a few minutes, then we kind of lost interest. Sometime during the first night Erick hung an empty beer bottle on my scale as a "scale cover". It remained there almost till the end of the trip. Several catfish were caught then finally we went to sleep. Until 6, that is, when the boat ramp opened and bass boats started pouring in like ants.

We made some food, recasted, and boated out some bait. This looked like it was going to be another day of catfish and random shenanigans. Which it was, of course.

The first was Ryan's little mud mishap. Yeah, he got stuck a little bit in East Texas's famous mud.

Because of the mud pit here, we have named this swim "the tide pool swim", which may confuse a lot of people when the lake comes back to normal level, where this pool will be 9 feet underwater.

The next thing we did was the catfish fillet contest, which we never really determined a winner because we all sucked. We at least got some edible meat out of the deal and made a nice dinner.

Our pattern contined too, Catfish...catfish...catfish...catfish. It felt like a waste. We weren't seeing anything as far as fish crashing or anything. We kept thinking it would pick up, but it never really did what we wanted it to.

Just when we thought we had been past the worst, the weather forecast said it was going to rain on us sometime that night, so we spent a good 2 hours cleaning everything around our swims up for the rain, which never came. We cooked the catfish, which was pretty good., and sat down and waited for the fish to come. As darkness fell we heard a sound out toward Erick's marker. Sploosh. A fish crashed. Finally they were here....not really. We heard some other crashes through the night but then never found our hookbaits.

That night was lazier than the first. It was spent searching stuff on Youtube, reeling in catfish, and chasing Nutria down the bank.

Yes, Nutria

We were asleep by 1, and I was up first at 6.

Now the next morning was not really what we expected. I knew nothing would really come together at the last moment like we had wished but I could wish that SOMETHING might happen. That something did.

I reeled in and recasted all 3 of my rods. I casted the middle rod last and got it bang on my marker, within 5 feet to the right of it, I was tightening the line to set the indicator when I started getting catfishy feeling twitches. I kept tightening and the marker moved, I was mad. I knew I hadn't come close to the marker so maybe it drifted or something. I dragged the kayak in the water and paddled out, my rod in one hand, paddle in the other. When I got to the marker something happened. It wasn't connected. At all. It had a fish on it. The bow of the boat swung around back toward open water and the fish began pulling. I slapped the water to wake Ryan and Erick up and yelled "Fish on!". Ryan got up and stretched a little but. He was confused to why I was in the kayak, if I had a fish on, or really what the hell I was doing in the first place. Soon he had the answer, as the fish surfaced and I yelled my observations- "High 30, possibly 40! It's a Buff!" At this point I start stressing. This fish is way over my PB, i'm in a kayak, I only have 1 open hand to paddle with, and I'm 40 yards from the bank. A solution worked itself out and I started the long one handed paddle back to shore. Erick and Ryan waited there with the net, and upon my arrival Erick slipped the net under the fish. WICKED!

Onto the mat. This was a big fish, and a buff at that. Very unexpected. Onto the scale, and the weight is 38lbs 10oz, a new PB and also a water body PB for me. Awesome!
Got all caught up with school. Got some great stuff going up tomorrow from this past weekend's session in East Texas with Ryan and Erick. I broke my PB buff, upped it to a beast of a 38lber right when we thought the session was over.

Got the fishfinder in the Diablo to work finally! I'm going to be fishing out of it a ton now. The bubbles on Grapevine should be fishing good right now, I'll go check that out this week sometime.

Fishing's really great right now for all species, so I should really start posting! haha

Of course I didn't want to just cast in the yard so I rigged up the 8wt and hit the library pond. All I really had to do was get some action shots but I went ahead and added a few fish to the shots I had to have for class.
I feel a lot more coming, so keep reading!
It wasn't great but the weather was excellent and I got out and fished for the first time in a few weeks.

The session started really slow. We showed up at the swim around 4 on Saturday and had lines in the water by about 5 after some baiting. John just got some new rods and reels and I had to try those out along with several other new bits and pieces but after a few hours with no crashes, no beeps, just nothing, we decided we didn't have enough bait in the water. A little more bait was added and it did the trick, fish started showing consistently.

After a good bit of baiting it was already dark and we ate, recasted, and talked for a bit. Around 1 we noticed the sky started to get dark(full moon, so it was noticable) so we looked up and lo and behold it started to rain. First rain there in almost 3 months, so this was a BIG deal. Didn't rain a ton but it definitely turned the fish on. After making another bucket of method the first fish showed on my rod, a small tiddler of a common, but it was a well welcomed first fish

When John and I make method, we go all out. This method contained more ingredients than I can remember.

first fish came shortly after. 6lbs and some change

The night became quiet shortly after, so it was time to get a few shots with the camera and hit the bedchair. Got a few of these, notice John's homemade banksticks and snag bars he let me use!

After this John picked up a catfish and the rest of the night was quiet till I hooked something that broke off, I think it was a grasser or something.

Few cool morning shots

My personal favorite pic from the trip

Morning didn't pick up quite as quickly as we had wished but the first fish came a while after sunrise. This fish made quite a ruckus in our swim. Somehow when John netted it he picked up a bloody snake in my net! It got caught but we got it out after a bit of confusion. <del></del>
no snakes
some snakes were harmed in this session

Fish was nice though, tipped the scales at a little over 10

The next fish was special. My first Oklahoma buff! She went 19lb 8oz

Ejected the lead too, I'm not sure I could have landed it without ejecting the lead

Next fish was even more special! 21lb 3oz buff ups my Okie PB and water body PB

Nice fish too! Notice the hump behind the head, fish was too big for it's own body

Gear shot, I'm a tart

Well, that's it! I'm still convinced this swim has lots more to offer. until then I'm sticking with my other swim. Just as a side note all of my fish were caught on tigernuts fished with either a PVA stick of fishmeal pellets or a method ball.Austin Andersonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17939637113913904342noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6206561418904248192.post-31859937467324261162011-09-09T00:18:00.000-05:002011-09-09T00:18:06.296-05:00San Antonio- Talapia woes and undersized bassI was in San Antonio last weekend and fished of course. I tried a place called Roosevelt Park on the San Antonio River both days that I fished. I was surprised at how much flow there actually was there. I didn't do too bad, caught some decent bass, Pretty good spot for being only 10 minutes from the hotel. The thing that immediately caught my eye were the TILAPIA. Tons of them. I had a few eat flies too, but none of them would stay hooked and they were EXTREMELY spooky. They were gone at the slightest ripple. Hooked a nice one but lost it...i'll catch one finally some day. There were some absolutely huge talaps there too. Oh well, here's a bass
