A Forty and a Dog; A weekend session

Here's a report from a weekend session I did a week ago. Over here it seems that every session I do something odd, profound, inexplicably and unpredictably weird happens, and this was no exception. I turned up at the lake much later than I had planned because of the hellish traffic I got caught in heading out of town, So I turned up right after nightfall. I quickly got bait in the water with the groundbait sling, 34 balls of method out at around 70 yards on the snags and got my rigs out. I landed two small catfish which is the usual bycatch, but other than that it was a very quiet uneventful night. I got everything sorted and went to sleep. That was around 11pm, so around 2 or 3am I wake up to this horrifying barking, like a dog that wanted to kill me. Being alone on the bank in the middle of the wilderness it frankly scared the bloody hell out of me, but I couldn't figure out how far away it was and if it was someone's pet or a stray that lived in the woods. Needless to say I didn't leave my bivvy that night.
The view

Morning came early and I recasted everything and put 15 more balls of method mix out. I quickly landed 3 catfish then nothing, so I began to cook breakfast. I was in the middle of making a cuppa when I spot a black dog about 100 yards away skittishly hiding behind a fallen tree. I could tell it was only a pup, a year or two old at most, and a male Labrador retriever. I motioned for it and it slowly took a few steps...a few more.. then it just broke into a full run and jumped on me. This was really odd considering I’m literally in the middle of NOWHERE. I couldn't figure out where the dog came from, and no one was near. I decided to try to keep it around in case someone came looking for it, but of course that never happened. It got to where the dog was sleeping in my bivvy, which wasn't bad at all. I could tell he was a bit skinny and hungry, so it almost seemed like the dog had been dumped at the lake.
Dog- now since been named "Buff"

The day was quiet, and I spent the first half of it waiting for my mate Shane to show up, after being extremely delayed and went from possibly arriving before me to arriving in the morning after some miscalculations, to my dismay. He finally did and with how quiet it was I had it in my mind that I wanted to get moving and pick a different swim in hopes of getting into some fish. I started to pick up one of my rods to reel it in when Shane convinced me to leave them in for a bit longer in case something came by. I began to dismantle my bivvy, and almost finished it when I looked up and my middle rod tore off. I lifted into a heavy fish and started running backward toward my truck to get the fish turned out of the snags. After a few minute's brawl the fat Buffalo rolled into the net and I was well made up. The dog didn't know what to think, and we were a bit shocked to say the least at our change in luck.
The fish went 40lb 11oz, and is my seventh largest from Lake Fork.

Almost immediately upon releasing the fish, I hooked into a high teener carp and landed that along with a few more catfish. After that...nothing. Our luck changed just long enough to stop us moving to a new swim, then the action petered off when the wind died.

Later in the day we found ourselves baiting up before dark. Here's a shot of Shane baiting with his new partner in crime.

The night began quiet, with some fish showing themselves but definitely not many. Toward the end of the night we landed two high teeners each and some cats, but nothing decent. Morning came, and Shane followed with a common that was literally the length of the rig he caught it on, about seven or eight inches. I had a small one then Shane had a mid twenty. We started baiting again and The buffalo came back into the swim, giving us each one, mine at 25lb and Shane's at 28lb

That brought us to the end of the session. Shane ended up getting attached to the dog, and due to the fact that it seemed an awful lot like someone had dumped it on the side of the road he decided to take him home and keep it at his fishing dog after verifying that he wasn't micro chipped at the vet's office. Another fun one!

Sandbass are in!

It's official, the 2011 sandbass run has started in Texas! Now if we could just get some rain soon! Every water body is really low but the sandbass are in the creeks coming in strong. Oh, today was multispecies day 1, so here's the day from start to end

Morning- woke up, grabbed an ultralight, and went down to the creek. I saw lots of shiners and sunfish and even a few small bass, I got several Greenies, Longears, and Bluegill. I didn't have my DSLR with me so I used my Nikon Coolpix S630 for these, and I think they turned out pretty well.

After that, I went to my secret spot, armed with 2 carp float rods and my 5wt Clouser. I saw tons of fish today, mostly carp and buffs. I went ahead to where I saw gar yesterday and set up a carp rod there, baiting with sweetcorn. I put a yellow inline spinner on my other rod and started blindcasting it around. I got a bump and set the hook and missed it, then 2 more bumps and a fish hooked up. BAM Sandbass! I was pumped! First sandbass ever from the secret spot!
I casted again with a twin of the same sandbass.
Cast 3 resulted in a small LMB
a few casts later I switched to the fly rod. First cast I hooked up  on something big
2lb sandbass!
FAT with eggs
I called Jonathan and got voicemail, so I kept casting. I caught 10 or so more sandbass then changed the carp rig to a catfish rig with stinkbait thinking I might get a channel cat. Well, that was not needed at all, because I got a channel cat on the very next cast with the fly rod
I  caught about 8 or 9 more sandbass, Jonathan calls and decides to come get in on the action. He's on his way when I hooked something huge, it hit like a freight train then turned and swam upstream, stripping off line like crazy. I fought this thing for several minutes, and I finally saw it- it was a 10+lb Drum. I saw it then shortly after the hook pulled! I lost it!

I caught 1 or 2 more sandies then Jonathan called and I walked the long distance back to meet him and we walked back to the spot together. When we get there, my catfish rod is snagged. I broke off the rig and we kept fishing. Jonathan caught 5 or 6 and I got 2 more, than Jonathan hooked something huge that I think might have been a hybrid striper. The hook pulled. The very next cast, Jonathan hooks a nice 7 or 8lb buff that fought like mad. I didn't get pics, so check Bluegill on the fly for pics. After we released that we moved upstream and we each got a small baby sandie then nothing, so we walked back. I thought the day was over, but no. Jonathan leaves after giving me some stuff(thanks!) and we drive off.

Mom wants to pick up something for dinner. I see a pond close to where she wants to go- Costco pond, connected to the Lake Vista canal system, and Mom lets me fish it for a few minutes. It was worth it! I casted out the carp rod with corn and threw some freebait out, then started walking the banks. I look down and see a large bronze flag- Tailing carp!!! I ended up blanking here but saw 7 or 8 carp. This place is really cool, i'm definately coming back in the near future, I heard there are hybrid stripers and huge blue cats in here!

Well, that's day 1- 6 species. Tomorrow I hope to get a Crappie and a Black Bullhead. Stay tuned!

CarpRunner tutorial

It's freezing and snowing right now. In Texas. Insanity.
Of course, the tarp blew off the kayak so it's covered in snow and ice. Great...

So, to beat the cold weather i'm doing a tying tutorial- the CarpRunner, my carp fly. I came up with it on a trip to PK lake, which if you don't know is a deep super clear lake on the brazos river. It is full of carp, and it's deep. Most of the carp were around 5-6 feet deep when cruising and eating. I needed a fly that would het down to them quickly, not make too much of a splash entry into the water, and most importantly catch them. I drafted the CarpRunner and it worked, so here it is
CARP RUNNER
Hook- any 2-3x long streamer size 10-6 (8 is what I use 95% of the time)
Eyes- black bead chain or black lead dumbells
Thread- light is the best- 6/0 or 8/0
Tail- tuft of Rootbeer rabbit fur
Body- Varigated chenille- Coffee/olive
Hackle- Brown or Olive
Rib- Medium Black ultra wire

1. Start your thread near the hook eye

2. tie in the eyes with figure 8 wraps

3. Tie in the rabbit fur tuft for the tail

4. tie in the chenille

5. Tie in the wire

6. Wrap everything forward and tie off.
The original version has lead dumbell eyes and some lead down by the hook bend to make it fall level but  really don't think that's necessary unless the extra weight is needed.

Fishing tips
I fish this on a 5 or 6wt fly rod, floating weight forward or double taper fly line, and a 8-10lb flourocarbon tippet. It also works great for really anything. The current species list is Largemouth, Smallmouth, and Spotted bass, Buffalo, Carp, River Carpsucker, Bluegill, Longear, Green sunfish, Redear sunfish, Redbreast sunfish, Channel Catfish, Blue catfish, Black and Yellow Bullhead, Black and White Crappie, Almost a Koi, Drum, and White Bass. It's an awesome multispecies fly that imitates craws, small minnows like sculpins,  and Larger nymphs present in many lakes and rivers. Tie one on and you'll catch e'm if they are there!

A few flies

It's been really cold around here for the past week so I've been tying a lot. Right now the current temp is 28 and tonight's low is 24. The wind and ice is making everything a mess so it's really hard to fish, so I'm just staying home and tying. This weekend I'm going to Lake Hawkins for the TFF 2nd annual Fly Fishing Idiots Pickerel trip. Last year it rained and I blanked on fish. I think rained like an inch while we were there last time so I hope it doesn't rain but overcast weather will bring the fish up so it might be a good thing for it to rain. Well, here's a few that i've tied this week.
Deer hair bass bug. I couldn't find any razorblades so I freehanded this with scissors and coated the front with nail polish to harden up the popping face.

Bunny Gurgler, kind of a fun tie.

Sickle hook Double Bunny

This is a new one, kind of a modified hairy fodder. This one works! I already got 2 bass on it a few days ago.

Roughfisher Carp Assasins.

New carp box is filling up quickly!

I also got a new bass box last week.

this is it on Sunday

And this is today. It's filling up quickly!
